"There were many reasons beyond the expectations placed on him for him to feel a sense of grief."
Ignis pauses. It was clear he was thinking on something. How much should he even tell Ash? Would there be a point to placing a pressure on this relationship that Noctis had with him by darkening it with inevitability?
"I'm glad to hear that. I've feared sometimes that my presence is a burden on him."
He lifts his hand, as if to curb words that he expected to come next.
"And not a burden in the sense of being visually impaired but emotionally. I come from a decade on and clearly have little good news to bring. Also, Prompto closed himself off when I arrived and it darkened the little time Noctis had left with him."
Ash had been about to quickly protest when Ignis lfited his hand and fully explained. he hummed thoughtfully, thinking on his next words carefully.
"...I remember Noctis told me once, that Prompto had this Pokemon. Some kind of bird, called a Satu? It could see the future, and it always looked sad when it looked at them. So, yeah. I'm guessing it was right then, that not-great things were gonna happen. But the thing is, things never stay as they are. It sounds like things have gotten pretty grim but, it can't just stay that way. Something'll change and it could get worse but given how bad it sounds right now, it seems more likely to me that things will get better."
Alas, Ash didn't know how important prophecies and such were in their world. He was just doing his best to try and give Ignis a bit of hope. It sounded like he really needed it.
"And aside from all that, you're still Noct's friend. Trust me. I called him after we chatted and I realised you knew him. He told me all about you and said that you're a great cook, which is true, and that you try and make sure things don't get too wild and that people are taking care of themselves. Which is also true."
Well the term was 'mother-henning'. But he knew better than to repeat that back to Ignis!
Lets be honest, Ignis had certainly heard Noctis's periodic griping but it was what Ignis was there to do. The steward had never left a job undone and no job was done poorly. Noctis felt the brunt of that often enough.
"Things will get better for the world, yes." He was specific with his wording. The world would get better. Even each of the would move on to things. Gladio mentioned a woman. Prompto had his interests and always was more resilient than he gave himself credit for. To be perfectly honest...
Ignis was the only one who, for once, lacked any ideas for the future to come after the dawn. Spending an entire life dedicated to a single person made things difficult as it was but for that person to ...
Oleander was the only indication that Ignis's thoughts weren't positive. The Meowstic wraps his little arms around and closes his eyes so he can give Ignis a hug and a moment of non-sight to collect his thoughts.
"I appreciate your complimentary words though I'm certain I can be quite frustrating. As our friend Gladiolus often said.. A bit of a stick in the mud."
While Diarmuid did pick up that Ignis was not really all that lifted by Ash's speech, he didn't alert Ash to that or otherwise mention it.
"Yeah...and I know some people find me annoying and that I talk too much." Ash shrugged easily. "Everyone's got something about them that can be a pain in the arse to deal with. But with your friends, you just deal with that and take it with everything else they offer cos their good qualities outweighs the bad."
"This is quite true. I have formed many friendships based on that alone."
Ignis pets Oleander's back, indicating he would actually like to see at the moment and the Meowstic turned its eyes back to Ash in that non-blinking forever stare he always seemed to have. He took his job as eyes very seriously.
"It all boils down to compromise. It is something I have fallen out of practice with but hope to sharpen the skill again while knowing you."
Ash had no idea the Oleander was acting as Ignis' eyes at that moment. Far as he was aware, Ignis had never 'seen' him in that sense. He simply gave him a big smile anyway, regardless whether he would see him or not.
"Hey, you've been putting up with me so far. Some people would've kicked my arse by now." He didn't miss that he could be a pain in the arse to deal with. And they were different types of people at the end of the day.
"You actually remind me a bit of this girl called Anthy who was here. She was really classy. As in like, she was super polite and always carried herself a certain way, you know? I used to send her pictures of all the grass type Pokemon I found, cos she really liked them."
"I've dealt with worse personalities." Ignis motions as if in the distance, indicating someone out of eyeline. "Noctis, for example. He provided many frustrations you would struggle to imagine considering how far he's grown."
Ignis raises a brow at Ash. To be fair to the young man Ignis absolutely did carry himself in a specific way.
"Yes, well... I learned from a young age that presentation is very important. I dealt with more dignitaries than Noctis did, as I did many things on his behalf."
Because there was no point in teaching Noct how to actually rule considering the inevitability of the future.
"Yeah ur. Presentation wasn't as much an issue for me. But I get it. You were both high society in your world." For Ash and his friends and family, more basic requirements had to be obtained first before you started worrying about glamming yourself up. Any nice clothes he ever had were presents or the ones he'd stolen. Granted that wasn't the case here but it was weird. It felt odd actually buying nice clothes and he kept finding himself checking how much money he was going to have after whenever he did that. Old habits and all that. Hopefully some of those habits didn't seem too weird. Like him hoovering up any food Noctis didn't eat.
"Still it's just. I don't know. In my world the way royalty works is so different from yours."
Ignis hardly counted as a member of high society considering his position but he could certainly look the part for the sake of doing his duty. He wouldn't correct Ash though. From the other side he looked high society and that was fine. Ignis never tried to appear better than anyone.
"How does it work in your world?"
He realized he knew little about Ash's world. Perhaps an understanding of where the young man came from would bridge the gap between them.
"Heh...I mean, years ago the monarch was in charge of my country. But they made bad decisions and people rioted and revolted - and eventually they agreed to make this thing called Parliament, where people vote for a person to represent their area of the country. Like...Johto's not that big, so imagine if everyone voted for someone from the town they live in to represent them in a council that's meant to manage everything. There's different groups that have different ideas, and if a group gets the majority then the person in charge of their group leads the council. That's kinda how Parliament works. And over time they've taken more power from the monarchy so they're more just like...a figurehead than ones with real power. But they get taxes to pay for their castles and all that shit."
He dragged his legs closer to himself, frowning at the looked at the floor.
"Nowadays...it was meant to work out that people had a say in what happened and how the country was run. But...they're - all the politicians - they're all funded by companies now. So the companies are the ones who dictate what laws they're gonna support and what policies they're gonna back. And what do they care about how things work out in the bigger picture? It's all about money for them. And we all know that the system isn't working but...we can't really stop it. The world is fucking trashed."
Diarmuid, sensing that Ash would get carried away and say something he'd rather not, reached out and touched his shoulder gently. Ash glanced up to him and leaned into his Pokemon.
Ignis sensed that this was moving towards something uncomfortable for Ash. He watches the young man lean against his Pokemon before looking away. Oleander followed the movement of Ignis's head on a slight delay so his trainer could see what he wanted to see instead of continuing to stare where he didn't mean to look.
"It is quite different, yes. We were ruled by the Caelum family for generations. The people were happy.. Even when war was going on the people held faith the royal family would protect them."
He leans back, crossing his legs neatly.
"Though now Insomnia is empty and abandoned. Only daemons tread there now, as well as Ardyn Izunia. He is the main cause for our problems though.. there is history there. When Noct returns the situation will surely be resolved and... ..Well, we will be able to rebuild from there."
"I really hope so." Of course, Ash imagined it as being a future where Noctis had taken the throne and would be leading or managing the restoration efforts. But it'd mean some bloodshed it sounded, which is never a good thing.
"Talking about all this, kinda reminds me of an old fairytale from back home. Or a prophecy I guess, but we don't know if it's true or not. It was just that, when the world was ruined and everything lay dying, the last unicorn in the world would show herself and run over the land, restoring life. It's, probably not true...I mean, people think they might be extinct. But it's, just something to hope about."
He lifted his head. it was probably a bit dumb to talk about. For one thing, there were tons of Rapidashes in this Pokemon world. And there might not be any unicorns in the world Ignis and Noctis came from. It just, kind of reminded him of that. "But it sounds like you guys can actually fix things. And make them better."
Well, there were Unicorn-LIKE animals but the only reason they'd be running across the world would be causing more trouble.. or migration. Either way, he hadn't seen them much as of late. Or any animal really. Only Daemons and that was difficult enough to deal with on the daily basis.
"The only prophecy we have has .. a less than fairy tale result. But thus far it has been coming true."
Whether it was simply how things were going to happen anyway or it was being guided by Ardyn.. It was coming true. The end result would hardly be an enjoyable one.
"Like, word for word? That's kinda unheard of back home." Sure there were prophecies but they were all from ancient times. There were some but they didn't seem likely to be coming true at all. He leaned on Diarmuid. Damn, this talk had gotten deep, when he'd been trying to just give Ignis a Pokemon egg. "Well, I'm still gonna hope for the best for your world. Way I see it, you guys can make a difference." And hey. Noctis was a goddamn Prince. If he couldn't change the world, what did that say for anyone else trying to survive in it?
"And in the meantime, I'm glad you guys are here to have the sun and Pokemon and all that."
"Well, it hasn't exactly been allowed to deviate."
But it was obvious that Ash was a bit uncomfortable with the dark talk. Easy enough to move on from the topic as Ash was attempting to do so already and that was fair.
"Yes, well. I could do without the music for one but it is a nice change of pace." Ignis reaches into his bag as he speaks and produces what looks to be a mini-muffin. It was a home made Poffin.
Diarmuid accepted the Poffin and nodded to him, before speaking with telepathy. "Thank you." He took a careful bite, clearly savoring the gift.
"Yeah, the music's a bit weird. Have you tried noise-cancelling headphones though?" It's on his 'to-buy' list once they've made this journey to the safari zone. Ash smiled easily as Diarmuid took another bite, making a soft sound of approval. "It is...delicious." There was a brief pause as the Gallade had to ask Ash for the English word he was looking for.
Ignis nods his acknowledgement. He had grown used to psychic types at least. He couldhandle their presence in his head now without the initial discomfort.
"Previously, as I used my hearing to move through the world it was quite a deterrent and irritant. but with Oleander I have not been as concerned with it."
Though, it might help with sleep... He looked thoughtful for a moment before lets it go for the time being.
"I will teach you this Poffin recipe, so Diarmuid does not need to wait for me if we are ever travelling separately."
"Really?" Ash beamed. "I can't promise it'll be as good. I've never actually baked anything in my life. I just know how to make stews and soups."
While he would eat almost anything, the main stables of Ash's diet before coming to Johto were foods that made the best out of cheap ingredients and often could provide easy leftovers for another day. So yeah, he'd eat take out and fast food and had done quite often, but he appreciated a hearty meal far more when given the choice. He'd even taken to polishing off Noctis' plate when he left his veg. He just didn't want it to be wasted.
"Here, I'll trade recipes with ya if you want. I just need to try and remember them properly."
Ignis was 100% certain that whatever recipe Ash wanted to give him that he probably already knew it or some version of it. It would be rude to deny him though, even if it was a weaker option.
"Of course. A moment while I bring up a few I've come up with from the options in this world."
He pulls out his gear, opening the.. significantly large file that he'd already put together. Under closer examination it was obvious that every recipe that wasn't Pokemon related directly was attuned to Noctis's tastes.
Ash raised both eyebrows, leaning over and looking at the book. "Jesus. You've got a ton of them already."
He sat back and thought over what he knew to make. "I mean, most of what we cooked back home was like, stews and soups...Dad always used to say, you make a lot out of a little with a soup. Course, it never quite tastes the same here." Different ingredients here, and it was just something he couldn't get when he copied his Dad's recipes. He might be missing something out, he just couldn't tell.
"Oh, that and fish. He loved any kind of seafood, so I reckon I know my way around fish in the kitchen."
"Fish is far simpler than people like to make it out to be. But soups and stew, they are good for large groups." Though Ignis knew how to make smaller portion as needed.
Really, any way he could get Noctis to eat a proper, fully rounded meal would be the favored way Ignis would have in making food.
"I have a section on soups if you wish to look."
He parts the pages to the right section and turns it for Ash to look through. The handwriting was different on different sections. Dahlia's was shakier, while Ignis's looked like someone typed it.
He flicked through the recipes, to see what was similar and what was foreign to him. "Well, you haven't got Guinness beef stew in here, but I haven't found any Guinness in Johto so that might not be a thing. Hm, and it looks like ya don't have Cobble in here either. It's like, sausage, bacon, barley and veg cooked through with sliced potatoes on top. Kinda like a shepherd's pie but it's just pure comfort food. Really warm and filling, ya know?"
It seemed a lot of these lacked certain ingredients...that Noctis didn't like, He couldn't help smiling and lifting his head. "Half of these have been changed so Noctis will eat 'em, right? I wouldn't mind the normal versions of em someday. He's just weird in being picky."
"Oh, I know what else ya haven't got in here. Brambrack! Man, back home Dad used to make it every autumn, during the last week of October. It's like, a teabread fruitcake kinda thing. You get mixed and dried fruit and the usual ingredients like flour and egg, and pour in tea and whiskey and let it soak overnight before you bake it. You cut off slices and have it with butter and it's soooo good! I had that instead of a birthday cake, cos cakes don't last that long and since it was us two, and sometimes my aunt, it just made sense to have brambrack instead."
What in the world was Guinness Ignis was thinking to himself as he listens to Ash flipping through the book. Cobble didn't sound real, but when it was described Ignis could put together a mental recipe. Perhaps Noctis would enjoy that, if Ignis hid the vegetables well enough..
"To a degree. There is always vegetables somewhere, but I fear even writing them down may make Noctis believe they are in there some how. Sometimes I can hide them well enough..." The recipes were written in such a way that NOctis could make them if he needed to without worrying about how to cut out the vegetables to be honest. Ignis simply expected it to happen.
"Bram..?"
His brows rose because.. Well, that.. sounded like a rum cake except closer to horrific second cousin.
"I.. try not to utilize alcohol in my recipes as it is difficult to come by.. and I fear my travelling companions may make other uses of it."
"Huh. It's pretty easy to find back home. Noctis and Prompto don't seem the types to get smashed but I'm guessing there were more people traveling with ya?" Noctis had given him two bottles of sake months ago and he still had a bottle of it spare.
"Still, it's a good recipe. It's really tasty and you don't need that much alcohol for it anyway. Probably why it crops up so much in recipes. Makes a little go further, ya know? And it's never enough to get someone off their face with it."
"We had enough options at home but I would prefer not providing the option in general. Though none of us were exactly heavy drinkers."
Still, if it wasn't needed then they didn't need to carry it. That was Gladio's point of view and Ignis shared it. Honestly, having to carry too much was a burden as it was and it wasn't as if at the beginning of their journey Noctis was all that engaged with carrying luggage.
No offense to Noctis. He had quite a bit of growth over time. Ignis had to admit to being impressed with him currently.
"I have used alcohol in recipes before though. Perhaps I can figure out how to distill my own while I am here, if they don't sell much within the stores."
